Practicing minimalism in the decoration of your spaces

Minimalism is a tendency to decorate with the fewest possible and basic elements in order to gain functionality, sobriety and space. Only what is considered strictly necessary and basic has a place. Within this style it can be said that there are three fundamental pillars on which everything will be based.

  • On the one hand we have the fact of minimizing everything that has to do with artistic elements. For example, pictures and those elements that hang on the walls.
  • The decorative elements that are located on a piece of furniture should be reduced to the minimum expression since they overload the whole and that feeling of spaciousness that is so necessary in this case is not achieved.
  • The environment that is built must be useful, usable, simple, with precision in the finishes – details, and with essential and rectilinear geometry. It can be said that the space that you want to decorate must be to live it and not to install furniture.

Here are some tips for you:

  1. Before starting to decorate, a common practice of professionals in the area is to first review their knowledge, asking themselves three key points:

  • For what purpose is the space that I am going to decorate used and what activities are going to be carried out.
  • How that space is going to be enjoyed and what usual activities are going to be practiced in it.
  • How many people will participate in that space. If the whole family will be there, if it is a room only for sleeping, if it is a work area…etc.
  1. There is a false belief that everything we buy is usually cheaper than what is made to measure. Actually, it is not always this way, it is preferable to seek advice from a professional in the decoration area.

  1. In the case of houses or apartments, a good idea would be to start from the living room and go out to the rest of the spaces. Keep in mind that the living room is the place where you spend the most time and therefore it is the place where you have to pay the most attention.

  1. In any area it is necessary to try by all means to eliminate those elements that only serve as ornamentation. Space is vital and must be won in every corner of it.

  1. In modern minimalist kitchens, aesthetics must be prioritized and merged with functionality. Spaces clean of objects, spacious, with light colors, preferably white and its shades in furniture and cabinets, and without ornamentation.

  1. If we are looking for a minimalist bathroom, the ideal is to have smooth walls so we will avoid distorting the perfection of the facing, if we cannot, we must use large tiles that reduce the joints. In the case of the floor, avoid using coatings that have joints to have a sense of continuity in the same style as the walls, although if wood is used – parquet is perfect for the feeling of warmth in bathrooms.

  1. As for the colors, it is always recommended that you choose monochromatic colors, that is, tones that do not differ much from each other. Otherwise, you can make the mistake of creating a space with many contrasts and therefore very strident, which will also give the feeling of being in a very small space.

  1. To decorate small rooms with colors, one point must be taken into account: if the ceilings are low, they should be painted in light colors, preferably white, so we will give a feeling of spaciousness in the room.

  1. To decorate large rooms with high ceilings we must give a more coherent look to the space so as a trick we will paint the ceiling two shades darker than the walls. A visual effect that favors the space perfectly.

Some recommended materials are steel or wood (noble materials) as they convey a really interesting sense of sobriety.

Leonardo da Vinci said “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. And it must be recognized that there are pieces of furniture that, following this line and after 80 years of their arrival, have not lost an iota of current affairs.

Sobriety, order and highlighting architectural details are the key tips for good interior design in the trend of less is more.
